MAN CHARGED IN SYDNEY

His head swathed in bandages Frank Howard John Carpenter Jones, aged 20 a labourer, appeared before a magistrate in the suburb of Burwood, to answer eight charges, which included shooting at and wounding Allen Clarke and shooting at Arthur Jay at North Strathfield, with intent to commit murmer. He was also charged that, being armed with a revolver, he robbed George Gray at Strathfield, and attempted to rob Demetrius Mylonas, at Burwood. Other charges were of breaking and entering and theft. A police sergeant said that hearing a call for help on July 28, lie went down to the Concord Municipal quarry and found defendant about 90 yards from a burning shed. The defendant was very badly injured. The ' detective-sergeant produced statements allegedly made by the defendant in which it was described how Jones held up the stntionmnster at North Strathfield. Ho is alleged to have stated that be had no intention of shooting Jay, as his revolver went off accidentally, while the shot -which struck Clarke had been intended to go into the floor. The alleged statements also described hold-ups. The police called no evidence, and Jones made no statement explaining his accident at the quarry, when two revolvers and a complete* burglar s equipment were found nearby. Jones was committed for trial at the criminal court on November 18.
In one of the crimes with which Jones is charged the sum of £2815 was taken from a strongroom. In two others the thief, who wore a Ivu Khix Klnn headdress, obtained a total of only £4 10s. In the actual shooting case, a thief held up a suburban stationmaster, and when the latter said the money was locked up, shot at him Two porters rushed into the room and one of them was shot in the abdomen.
