LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 27, 1885) County Council—At the meeting of the Ashburton County Council there were present, Messrs W. C. Walker (chairman), C. J. Harper, D. McLean, (}. W. Leadley, E. S. Coster, J. Jackson and E. G. Wright. It wgs stated that the amount of rates for 1884 collected to date was £4916 19s 6d, leaving £142 2s 6d outstanding, while for 1883 the sum of £2907 3s od had been paid leaving £57 outstanding. The cost of maintenance of the water supply for the six months was £448 17slid. It was decided that whenever the water races could be utilised, without loss of water, for the purposes of driving chaff cutters and other light machinery from water wheels, the Council is prepared to grant applications subject to the approval of the Engineer. It was agreed that the Council would recoup the Road Boards any expenditure incurred by them in exterminating small birds to the extent of Is 6d per 100 for heads or eggs.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” Sept. 27, 1910). Shooting.—The following will represent the Ashburton Guards in their match with the Farmers’ Co-op. Miniature Rifle Club-.—Captain W. 11. Tucker, Sergeant B. Stephens, Corporals A. Reid, W. Bradshaw, Bugler McKenzie, Privates F. Gale, P. Gourdie, Bramley, C. Naylor, Ross and Tutty. Social at Ruapuna.—At a social held by the Ruapuna Guild, which was only recently formed, songs were sung by Misses Howden, Williams, Burgess, , Mrs D. Q. Sewell, junior, and Mr J. A.-* Painter; recitations were given by Mr H. Williams, dialogues by Misses Burgess, W.ithell, Murdoch and Messrs J. anti C. McDowell, Mayfield. Other items were given by Misses S. Glassey, D. Ellmers, Messrs J. Hewitt, and J. Glassey. Mr Muller, Miss Williams and Mrs "Wilson were at the piano, and the Rev. J. Wilson occupied the chair. School Essays.—Results of the essay competition, “Why Do "We Celebrate Empire Day?”, promoted fay the Empire Day Celebration Committee, were as follow Girls; Doris Christensen (Borough) 1, Madge "Walsh (Convent) 2. Boys: R. Lennon (Convent) 1, P. Hanranan (Convent) 2. Catholic Club.—The annual meeting of the Ashburton Young Men’s Catholic Club was held last evening, with Mr D. McDonnell in the chair. The following officers were elected:—President, the Rev. Father O’Hare; vicepresident, Mr T. M. Rrophy; treasurer, Mr E. Hanrahan; secretary, Mr J. A. Lennon; librarian, Mr J. McCormick; council, Messrs S. Madden. D. McDonnell, J. O’Giady, J. F. Pritchard, and F. Hanrahan; auditors, Messrs M. J.Burgess and F L. Bropliy.
