FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "Guardian,” Sept. 20, 1885). Notice of Dismissal.—At the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening Cr. T. Quill gave notice that he would move at the next meeting of the Council, ‘‘That all officers of the Council, except the gentleman holding the office of Town Clerk, be subject to one month’s notice to terminate their agreements.” Cr. Roberts moved, "That all the Council’s labour gang, except three, be dismissed as soon as Kermodo Street, between William Street and the East Belt, be finished.” He pointed out the need for economy. After a short discussion the Council decided to give the required notice to the gang.
Druids’ Lodge.—At the meeting of the Star of Ashburton Lodge, U.A.0.D., last evening, Bro. Cates was appointed senior trustee in place of Bro. Olsen (resigned), and Bro. Nolces was elected to the position of minor trustee.

Choir Concert.—The St. Stephen’s choir tendered a sacred concert to , the inmates of the County Hospital yesterday afternoon. Solo items were given by Mr J. Templeton, Mrs Dee and Mr A. Claridge.
Oddfellowship.—At the half-yearly meeting of the Ashburton District Manchester Unity the following nominations of officers were taken Provincial G.M., Dep. Prov. G.M. Bro. W. J. Going (Methven); Dep. Prov. G.M., I .G. Bro. F. Pritchard (Ashburton): District Treasurer, P.P.G.M. Bro. Charles Reid. A jewel was presented . J am es Paterson. KP.G.M. Bro. William Soal conferred degrees at a Past Grands’ Lodge held as f°bovv:—P.G. Bro. Bates (Methven), P.G. Bro, S'. Culverhouse (Tinwald), P.G. Bro. I. Read (Waterton), and P.G. Bro. G. Leonard (Ashburton).
Dominion Day.—ln celebration of Dominion Day the Territorials and Cadets held a parade. The County and Temperance Bands were also present. The parade state was:—Staff —Captain W. 11. Tucker (in command). Major Av. E. Dolman, V.D., Captain-Quarter-master G. D. Offlefford, Captain Hewitt, and Lieutenant E. J. Paul. Ashburton Rifles—Captain A. J. Childs. Lieutenants R, Meechan, and: R. H. Davis, 44 rank and file. Ashburton Guards— Lieutenant P. L. Orr and 41 other ranks. High School Cadets—Captain W. F. Watters, Lieutenants E. T. Norris, and E. Oliver, and 22 other ranks. County Band—Bandmaster C. Gass and 22 bandsmen. Temperance Band—. Bandmaster G. Hosken and 27 bandsmen.
