SUNDAY GAMES
OCCUPYING BOYS AT HOSTELS.
MT. ALBERT GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 2d. Permission for the boys at the hostel of the Mount Albert Grammar School to play games on Sundays was given at a meeting of the Auckland Grammar School Board. The* headmaster, Mr F. W. Gamble, stated in a letter that considerable difficulty had been experienced in keeping the boys occupied on Sundays.
The letter stated that with the large numbers of boys now in residence at the hostel, the question was becoming more difficult. There were several hours each (Sunday when the boys would definitely be better off in the open air, and this opened up the question of Sunday games. Skating in the gymnasium had been abandoned on account of the noise, and at present table tennis was the only game which could be played to give any form of exercise.
‘‘l have thought that a miniature golf course could be constructed without cost in the back paddock, and it would certainly be popular,” continued the headmaster. “The boys are continuing voluntary work on the site of the tennis courts, and they should shortly bo completed. This should also provide some outlet for the boys’ energies.” “I can see no objection! to this reasonable request,” said l MV A. St. Clair Brqwn. “I agree so long as we avoid organised games that do not disturb neighbours,” said Dr. E. Robertson. Professor Thomas said he did not think there could be any objection to the playing of tennis in the afternoons in the hours when there were no divine services. “The hostel is not near any church, so what have the hours of the .services to do with the question?” asked MiBrown. “Churchgoing people will not be there.” Mr Robei f tson agreed that the playing of healthy games in the open air would bo of muck more benefit to the boys than if they were to sit round and gossip. “I think we may inform the headmaster that games may be enjoyed discreetly on Sundays,” concluded the chairman, other members of the board signifying agreement.
