COMMERCIAL NEWS

GRAIN AND PRODUCE. AUCKLAND MARKETS. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, September 24. The chief feature of the local grain and produce markets is the scarcity of supplies in many important lines. The Waipiata arrived from the south yesterday with a fair-sized cargo of potatoes, but these arrived on a bare market, and simultaneously with a sharp finning of values at southern ports. As a consequence, local importers based their prices on to-day’s southern parity,, approximately £ls a ton, the highest figure that has ruled for many years. The oats market is very firm. Dealers have difficulty in obtaining their requirements, and local rates have been moved up 2d to 4s lOd. Oatsheaf chaff is steady at £7 15s a. ton.

Fowl wheat is selling steadily at 5s 7d a bushel. Maize is in good demand at 4s 5d to 4s 6d a bushel.

iPollard is selling freely, the mill price being £7 a ton. Onions are almost unprocurable. However, there should be plenty available next week, as the first Canadian shipment is due on the Niagara, and later in the week the Mariposa will bring further supplies from California. These are expected to sell at about 23s per 1001 b bag, compared with 275, which is to-day’s valuation.

PRICE OF WHEAT IN BRITAIN. LONDON, September 23. Wheat cargoes are quieter and lower. Parcels are easier. Futures are quoted: —London: September, 27s 4d per quarter. New terms: February, 26s lOd. Liverpool: 6s s£d per cental; December, 6s 3d; March, 6s.

THE SYDNEY WOOL SALES.

RATES FULLY MAINTAINED.

SYDNEY, September 24. At the wool sales 12,017 bales were offered and 10,196 sold, 1177 privately. There was good: competition from Japanes©' buyers, and excellent support from the Continent and Yorkshire on suitable lines. The previous day’s rates were fully maintained. Very burry and dusty wools showed irregularity; greasy merino to 20d.
