Criticism of the lack of uniformity in penalties on intoxicated motorists was made by Mr A. E. Ansell, M.P., at the annual meeting of the Otago Automobile Association. He said that the class of motorist known as intoxicated should receive his education behind bars. He was astonished at the variety of penalties inflicted, and considered that the Magistrate had been wrong in suppressing the name of a woman motorist recently convicted.
