BACKING FOR SMITH
THE TASMAN AIR SERVICE. UP TO £IOO,OOO AVAILABLE. (United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day.
Mi- H. G. Armstrong (representative. in Australia of th§ British Pacific; Trust), said that the Trust had offered to back Sir Chflrles Kingsford Smith to the extent of more than £IOO,OOO, in his proposed trans-Tas-man air service. Mr Armstrong said if was recognised in. many directions that Sir Charles Kingsford Smith was more or less entitled to this section of the Pacific route, which he had done so much to pioneer. Contrary to expectations that the Trust’s control of the output- of British Sikorsky flying boats would upset Smith’s plans, the Trust, on being informed of bis intention, had advised that it would endeavour to facilitate them. “The Trus£ has cabled me,” said Mr Armstrong, “that subject to an agreement as to plans and methods it will be willing to interest itself in the provision of capital for Kingford Smith s enterprise to an amount exceeding £IOO,OOO. Discussion of this offer is likely to follow.”
