THE CARNIVAL AT ALLENTON.
CROWNING OF THE QUEEN.
CEREMONY ON SATURDAY NIGHT
With the crowning of the successful Queen in the Allenton Carnival on Saturday evening a most successful function, promoted to raise funds to build a swimming bath at the Allenton School, came to an end. It was announced that the profit made was £444 12s 10d’, and that a few amounts had still to come to hand 1 . For several weeks sections of the Allenton community have been concentrating on the carnival, the chief interest being in the two Queen candidates, Miss Josie McElhinney (Eastern) and Miss Olga Bathurst (Western). The sum brought in as a result of this activity was £312 12s lOd, divided l as follows: Eastern Queen £l7O, Western Queen £142 12s lOd. An art union conducted in conjunction with the carnival brought in £35, and the profit from the bazaar held recently was £97.
The Allenton School was filled to overflowing when the announcement of the result of the Queen Carnival was announced by the Lord Chancellor (Mr L. A. Charles), and there was warm applause for both candidates and expressions of gratification at the large sum that had! been collected. As soon as the result of the carnival had been made known, Queen Josie, attended by Misses Mary McDonnell, Merle McKay, Ilona, Sparrow and Jean Jary, as Maids of Honour, Crownbearer, Mace-bearer and flower girls, headed a procession to the stage and took her seat on the throne, while Princess Olga, attended by Misses Jean Moodie, Helen Boag, Audrey Chambers and Dorothy Jamison (maids of honour) took up positions on the stage, where a number of officials, including Messrs EL CL Bathurst (chairman of the School Committee), E. S. Chambers (headmaster of the school), and Mrs A. T. Smith (Mistress of the Robes), also had prominent places. The costuming was excellently carried out and the ceremony was one on which those in charge arc to be congratulated. The Lord Chancellor crowned the Queen, and announced a number of honours that had been conferred upon those wlio had taken a prominent part in the function. The chief of these were Mrs Smith, Messrs E. C. Bathurst. J. McElhinney (fathers of the candidates), E. S. Chambers, D. B. Moore, W. James, H. G. Ferrier, J. H. Stevens and O. H. Hardie (members of the school committee). At the close of the ceremony Mr Chambers presented to each of the candidates a framed certificate of life membership in the swimming club that is to bo formed when the bath is built. Mr Bathurst outlined! the activities of the several committees that had been working for the carnival, and ©xpicsscd th© gratitude of the school authorities to everyone who had assisted to make the carnival such an outstanding success. A concert programme was then presented, items being given by the following: Mrs J. Childs, Masters Ray Ede and H. Shaw, Misses Maisie Wilson, .T. Wright, K. Beatty and Mahon, and Mr C, Hopwood’s party. Mrs H. J. Chapman was accompaniste.
