MYSTIFYING DELAY

ENGLISHWOMAN DETAINED. The Hon. Airs Guy Liddell, sister of Lord Revelstoke, and her four children Avere formally admitted to the United States recently after a remarkable and still ]someAvhat mystifying experience Avith the immigration authorities, says the “Daily Telegraph.” Mrs Liddell Avas detained for four hours in her suite in the French liner Normandie Avhen it arrived. She Avas rescued from the unpleasantness of spending the night on Ellis Island hv her lawyer, in Avhose custody she Avas alloAved to leave the ship. She appeared the next morning before the Board cf Inquiry on the island. Immigration Commissioner Rudolph Reimer, Avho presided, afterAvards announced that Airs Liddell AA'ould Vie admitted as quota immigrant, Avhich means that she can remain in the United States as long as she pleases, and that her son Peter (6) and her three daughters, Gay (7), Juno (5) and Maude (4) Avould he accepted as temporary visitors. The immigration authorities at Washington Avere quoted as saying that Airs Liddell had been detained on the strength of a letter to them from her husband, Captain Guv Liddell, asserting that slicAvas attempting to bring her children into the United States permanently. Her laAvyer, Air Sol. A. Rosenplatt, said, howeyer, that the cause of the delay was still unknoAvn either to him or his client.

It Avas pointed out that in any case Airs Liddell only had a temporary permit for the children Avhen she sailed from England, and that they AA'ould therefore haA r c to return Avithin six months. Her oavii position is different, for she has many relations in the United States.

Her grandfather was the late Pierre Lorillard, of Ncav York, famous for his tobacco fortune.

During the early-morning journey across Ncav York Harbour to Ellis Island, Airs Liddell, avlio took the children with her, said: “I am as much in the dark as anyone.”
