lauriston. Mrs W. Gimson presided over a large attendance at the September meeting of the Lauriston branch of the Women s Institute. Visitors from the Ashburton Centre were Mcsdames F. Curtis, Andrews and Reid. It was agreed to again sell some of the basketware made by the Auckland Institute for the Blind. Mrs J. A. Mackie and Miss A. Hampton were appointed delegates to the meeting in Ashburton. It was decided that the branch assist in the group competition to be held in Ashburton at the end of September. Mrs Curtis gave an interesting talk and report on the recent conference at Auckland. Mrs Andrews demonstrated on quilting and paper flowers, and exhibited some fine examples of the work. Competitions resulted as follow: Butter: Miss D. Maidens 1, Miss M. Letham 2, Mrs H. T. Crothers 3. Worked cushion: Miss E. Lemon 1, Misses M. Letham and M. Lemon (equal) 2, Miss Ella Letham 4. Best bloom: Miss M. Letham L Miss E. Lemon and Mrs Cork (equal) 2, Miss M. Lemon 4. On the motion of Mrs Gimson, Mrs Curtis and Mrs Andrews were accorded votes of appreciation for their address, demonstrations and for acting as judges in the various competitions. The hostesses were Misses May Hampton and D. Maidens.
STAVELEY. The Staveley troop of Girl Guides, under Captain Nanci Norman, was inspected by the Commissioner (Miss E. Chamberlain), who enrolled two new guides, and also' enrolled the following members on the committee: —Mesdames W. Norman (president), G. L. Button, G. McFarlane, A. G. Langridge, W. Gundrv. E. /Williams, A. Wright, L. Hicks and N. Watson. The Commissioner gave a talk on guide law and a drill lesson. After afternoon tea, community songs concluded the visit. The* Loyaj Pioneer Lodge, M.U.1.0.0. F., and visiting brethren attended a church parade at the Staveley Prebyterian Church yesterday, afternoon. The Rev. A. A. C. Lion conducted the service and spoke on “Friendliness, Love and Truth.” Miss Agnes Syme sang a solo and Mr S. T. Goldsmith was organist. After the mild weather <>f July and August the cold days of this month, and the many frosts of this month are a disappointment. Spring feed is backward now. Though there is still about a fortnight’s winter feed left on many farms, farmers' are anxiously looking for a stronger growth of grass than is yet in evidence.
RAKAIA. A meeting of the Rjakaia Horticultural Society v r as held in the library with Mr C. Shannon..presiding. Owing to the lateness of the season it was decided to postpone the show for a fortnight. BARRHILL. The Barrhill Social Club held its fortnightly social and cards evening in the school. The winners at euchre were Miss Jean Holmes and Mr F. Reid. Mr T. Lawler played the music for the dancing, with extras by Miss B. Tizzard 1 and Mr S. Drew. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss D. Stephens and Mr A. Stephens. Mr W. Holmes was master of ceremonies. WILLOWBY. Overseas Mission anniversary services were held recently throughout the Willowby Methodist circuit. The Rev. Frank H. Hayman, for a number of years vice-principal of the College at Rouiana, Solomon Islands, gave a lecture on Friday evening in the Willowby Church. Mrs A. S. Hayman presided at the organ. The following afternoon Mr Hayman addressed the Young People’s Missionary Auxiliary. Items were given by Ellis Garrod and Ronald Whiting, Gladys Parrish, Janet Parsons, May Knox, Nell Greenaway, Joyce Beilby and l Ngaio Chapman. On Sunday morning Mr Hayman occupied the pulpit, speaking on the “Educational Aspect cf Mission Work.” MARONAN. Mrs Graham Scales presided over a well-attendecl meeting of the Maronan Women’s Institute in the schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Three new • members were welcomed. Mrs J. Whiting and Miss B. Galletly were appointed delegates to attend the MidCanterbury Federation meeting on October 4) It was decided that in future the meetings would be bold on the first Thursday in each month instead of the second Thursday. A letter was received from Mr W. J. Minogue (Postmaster) asking that representatives would attend a mooting to be convened in Asnourton by the Mayor in support of health camps during the summer. A schedule of a. flower show arranged by the Hinds Women’s Institute was received, and the Maronan members were invited to attend on September 20. Arrangements were completed for the Maronan flower show on September 28*. The president reported on having attended the drama festival in Ashburton, also a successful group meeting at Hinds, and also the dance held recently for the Maronan Women’s Institute funds had been a great success. Mrs Graliam Scales gave a comprehensive and interesting report ,of tlie conference in Auckland and a visit to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind. The hostesses were Mrs G. Scales and Miss A. McCormick. Miss Isitt demonstrated the making of mocassins, . and showed an artistic example. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs J. McQuilkin (president of Hinds Women’s Institute) and Mrs
Davis (member of the Mid-Canterbury Federation) judged the competitions. The awards were as follow: —Thrift article, to be entered for the group •entry in September in Ashburton: Mrs E. Rhodes 1, Mrs D. Hamber and Mrs H. Galletly (equal) 2, Mrs G. Scales 4. Plat© of biscuits and recipe: Mrs J. Addis 1, Mrs H. Galletly 2, Miss D. Whiting 3. Vase of flowers: Mrs I>. Hamber 1, Miss Isitt 2, Miss D. Whiting 3. Hand-made gloves: Mrs Matt Farrell 1, Mrs E. Rhodes 2, Mrs G. Scales 3. The judges commended members on the excellence of the entries in all sections.
EALING. The monthly meeting of the Ealing Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, the president (Mrs J. Withell) being in the chair. The resignation of Mrs Mclntyre was received with much regret. One new’ member was nominated. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Simpson in her bereavement. Results of competitions were as follow:—Knitted garment: Miss H. McGuigan 1, Miss F. McGuigan 2, Mrs Good 3. Plate of pikelets: Misses F. and H. McGuigan (equal) 1, Mrs J. Withell 3. Decorated howl of flowers: Miss H. McGuigan 1, Miss F. McGuigan 2. The premier bloom, an anemone, was won by Mrs J. Withell. A bright and comprehensive report of the conference was given by Mrs Withell, and she was accorded a vote of thanks. Community singing, led by Mrs iDonaldson, was greatly enjoyed by all, while a debate, “Should men help in the house?” brought forth many good arguments for both sides. The affirmative was proclaimed by popular vote. The potato-peeling competition, done while blind-folded, was won by Alls J. McKenzie. The delegates elected to attend the Federation at Ashburton are Mrs Withell and Miss McGuigan. Hostesses for the day were Airs Good, Aliss P. Good and Mrs pierce.
MONTALTO. There was a large attendance at the fortnightly euchre and dance held in the Montalto School. The ladies’ prize was Avon by Mrs F. Dolloav, and the men’s prize by Mr A. Phillips. The consolation prizes were awarded to Airs Tooley and Mr W. Pender. Aggregate prizes were Avon by Aliss Peggy Anderson and Air A. Phillips. The music Avns supplied by Air C. L. Giddens, Avith extras by Messrs T. Alorgan and A. Phillips. Arbor Day was held at the Alontalto School at the end of the term holidays. Mr W. S. Greenslade and Air F. D. Aloitoav donated some beautiful shrubs for the school.
