OBITUARY

MRS H. F. NICOLL. Mrs Anna Juliana Nicoll, wife of Mr H. F. Nicoll, died at her residence, “iPenscroft,’’ Ashburton, last evening after haying been in'lndifferent health for some months. Mrs Nicoll, who had been a wellknown resident • of the Ashburton County for about 40 years, was the second daughter of Mr Julian Case and Lydia, Countess Mereedo, and was born at Lisbon, Portugal. The early part of her life was spent in Portugal and China, where her father was American consul at Hong Kong. Mrs Nicoll was educated at Essex, England, and came to New Zealand in 1889 to be married. She settled in Christchurch, but eventually went with her husband to Ashburton, where she has lived ever since. In her eai'ly days Mrs Nicoll associated herself actively with sport, being the champion tennis player of her club and a keen horsewoman. At Ashburton she took no part in public affairs, but devoted herself to her family. Mrs Nicoll set a- splendid example of unselfishness and thoughtfulness for others. Her kindly nature won her a wide circle of friends in Canterbury. Mrs Nicoll is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters, Mesdames V. Donaldson (Cashmere Hills, Christchurch), R. le C. Latter '(Cloudy Range, Kaikoura), and Messrs Arthur and Gerald Nicoll (Ashburton).
