HOCKEY.

DOMINION WOMEN’S TOURNEY. SOUTH OTAGO BEATS ASHBURTON. GISBORNE, Sept. 5. The weather was fine for the sixth day’s play in the Dominion women s hockey championship. Present indications are that Eastern and' South Otago will fight out the final, though the defeat ol either to-morrow would bring in an additional team. In the A section Eastern leads by two points from Southland, but if the latter win against Canterbury to-morrow, and if Eastern is beaten by Auckland, Eastern and Southland must play-off for the leadership in that section. Similarly, in section B, South Otago leads by "two points from Akitio, but if the latter beats Wellington to-morrow and South Otago is defeated by Wairarapa, then South Otago and Akitio must play-off. During to-day’s play M. Norton (Marlborough) broke her collarbone. Eastern has scored 20 goals in the tournament. No goals have been scored; against the team. To-day’s results were:—

Sectilon A. Eastern beat Canterbury, 5-0. Southland beat Marlborough, 3-0 Auckland beat Bush, 4-1.

Section B.

South Otago beat Ashburton, 6-1

Akitio beat Poverty Bay B, 3-0. Rualiine drew with Wellington, 0-0.

The meeting of South Otago and Ashburton was the most important game to-day, having a big bearing on the final positions of the teams. The easy win of the former team makes it almost certain of reaching the final. The position of runner-up is still un~ certain, three teams—Ashburton, Akitio, and Rualiine—all having prospects. The display of Ashburton to-

day was very disappointing. The team did not play nearly so well as in earlier matches. South Otago showed allround superiority, the forwards having too much pace and combination tor the losers, whose- play lacked sting. The first half was mostly in favour ot Otago whose defence was equal to all calls on it. The score at half-time was 3-0. Just after the interval F. Donaldson scored the only goal for Ashburton, who were defending for most of the time. The winners added three more goals before the finish. The Ashburton forwards had a day off, too many chances being missed. Of the backs, Loach and Jary were the best, but the others were below form.

HASTINGS RETAINS NORDON COP. HASTINGS, Sept. 5. The Hastings hockey) representatives had a close call against Dannevirke in defence of the N ordon Cup, the holders winning bv three goals to two. Five minutes before the end Hastings scored, and then on time goaled again.
