DOMINION CENTENARY
THE CELEBRATIONS IN 1940.
CO-ORDINATED SCHEMES MOOTED
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 29.
Co-operation between the principal cities in organising a comprehensive series of celebrations for the Dominion centenary in 1940 was advocated by the Mayor (Mr Earnest Davis) at the City Councdi to-night. He praised what was being done in Wellington with a view to holding an international exhibition, but considered that an approach should be made through the Government to ensure a co-ordinated effort. He felt there was. no room for parochial considerations, and the celebrations should be national in conception and character. The Government would he failing in its duty if it did not give a lead to the whole Dominion. Mr Davis emphasised that each cent,re had something distinctive to offer, and a scheme could Ire arranged so that people could attend the events in each province. Mr Davis also put forward the suggestion that Auckland should make a contribution to the occasion of the local authorities on the Tamaki Isthmus and North Shore as Greater Auckland by the time of the centenary celebrations. He admitted the task would not he easy, but the present multiplicity _of local authorities was not in keeping with modern administrative requirements. Hie Mayor said he proposed to call a representative conference for the formation, before the end of the current year, of an advisory committee for the whole metropolitan area.
