The Queen of the Belgians was killed when a motor-car driven, by tho King crashed into a tree. The King was slightly injured. The King, by some unexplained chance, lost control when he was driving beside a lake near Kussnaclit. The car swerved into a belt of trees that bordered the lake, and the Queen, who was sharing the front seat with the King, was killed instantly. The King/was cut alxiut the head.
Tho chauffeur, who was in the back seat, was not injured.
It is thought that the King could not recover control of the car after a sharp curve on the narrow road. He and Queen Astrid had been for some weeks on a holiday in the Swiss and Italian alps, and had just visited the Dolomite peak, on which there is a tablet to commemorate King Albert’s ascent.
Another report of the accident says that the Queen was alone in the back seat, which received the full force of the impact.
