STATE LOTTERIES DISCUSSED
(Per Press Association } WELLINGTON, This Day. The Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union had before it to-day a remit that the Government he requested to run State lotteries in place of the present art unions, the profits to: be devoted to hospitals and first aid. A definite decision on the question was shelved, an amendment being adopted, on the casting vote of the president, to defer it to the next annual conference of the union.
Mr Holyoake, M.P., said ho did not like tagging hospitals and charitable aid on to the remit. Why not run lotteries for the benefit of the Consolidated Fund ? he asked.
The executive gave its support to the Counties’ Association in endeavouring to have a minimum registration fee of £3 placed on Alsatian dogs. A remit was also passed to amend the Dog Registration Act so. as to provide an insurance scheme, by a levy on the registration of all dogs, to indemnify stock-owners whose stock are injured or destroyed by dogs.
