DEMOCRAT PARTY
CHARGE OF VOTE-SPLITTING.
REPLY BY THE LEADER. s (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The leader of the Democrat Party (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) made a statement to-day that the only real criticism that had emerged was the charge that the Party would split the votes against Labour. ' This was an old story often trotted out to help a Government that could not rely upon its own merit. The Democrats believed that the farce of supporting a party or union of parties, deteriorated in personnel and void of principle, merely because they called themselves Nationalists instead of Socialists, should be ended. It was within the power of the present- Government to avoid vote-splittiug by adopting compulsory and preferential voting. If it did not adopt that remedy and pass the necessary legislation this session any talk of vote-spljtting was sheer hypocrisy. Labour as well as the Government had an admirable opportunity of showing their sincerity in this matter.
