FOUR FISHING SCHOONERS LOST
OTHER DERELICTS ADRIFT.
(United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) ST JOHN (Newfoundland), Aug. 27. It is estimated that 40 fishermen were drawned during a hurricane at the week-end. Seventeen men from four schooners are known to be dead. Four derelict vessels are adrift off the coast, the \ crews being missing.

MONTREAL, August 28
Messages from iSfc John report deaths and destruction from a violent 60 miles-an-hour gale on the south-east coast of Newfoundland.
Three fishing schooners were wrecked in Trepassey Bay. j Two men were found dead in the cabin of one schooner, and it is feared tliat nine others who are missing from the other two were drowned. Scores of smaller craft were wrecked. Many houses were unroofed and some dwellings were blown away. Cargoes oi fresh fish were lost and large, quantities of dried codfish were blown to sea.
