SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.
SATISFACTORY INSPECTORS’
REPORT
The Ashburton East School Committee met last evening, when there were present Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman), W. J- Miller, E. H. Childs, C. G. Dellow, S. Groves, AV. H. Robinson and J. Cook. The Canterbury Education Board advised Quit the painting of the and the schoolliouse in view of the approaching jubilee would be reported oil by the foreman. The headmaster (Mr S. G. Macvarlane) reported that the attendances for the last four weeks, with the roll numbers in parentheses, were 401 (444), 403 (442), 395 (442), and 395 (441). The percentages were 94.6, 91.4, 89.3 and 89.5. Attendances during the last two weeks had been affected by sickness, chiefly whooping cough. The school broke up on Friday. The average attendance for the term had been 401.7 and the average roll 441.2. The report of the inspectors who visited the school last month was of a most satisfactory character. The school was represented at the Ashburton County Council’s Arbor Day function and the importance of the day had been referred to in school. No function had been held as suggested as there was now little room for trees or shrubs at the school. Football and basketball was still iu progress and it was hoped to make the fixtures against the Linwood and Eiffelton Schools annual events.
The report was adopted. For the visiting committee, Mr Groves reported on small requirements at the school.
Messrs Groves and Kerr were appointed a visiting committee for the coming period. The chairman reported that the arrangement of the jubilee was well in hand. Sub-committees were working in the interests of the various sections of the programme. The bank pass-book showed a ( credit balance of £2l 16s.
