TREACLE MYSTERY
CHINESE CHARACTERS ON TINS.
PACKED' IN A BUTTER-BOX
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, August 26,
The accidental breaking of a butterbox at the Thorndon railway station today revealed, not butter, but tins marked with Chinese characters and filled with a, dark viscous substance. Reacting to their suspicions, the railway' authorities advised the C ustoms officials, who, in turn, notified the police.
Detectives were quickly on the scene and set a watch for the claimants of the box. Two men duly arrived, signed for the box, and paid the freight charge. The detectives stepped forward and requested an interview at the police station. There the men ueie questioned, but denied, that the sticky stuff was opium. It was treacle, they insisted, and continued to insist until eventually an official was induced to taste it. It proved to he common household treacle, and there is now considerable speculation as to its destination and the reason, for its strange packing.
