WAR BUOY’S PERFORMANCE.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

In well-nigh perfect weather and. on a track that was lightning fast, the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club opened the carnival of racing at Addington on Saturday before a crowd that was well up to the average in numbers. The Governor-General (Lord Galway) had his first experience of trotting, and he appeared to thoroughly enjoy what must have been to him a novelty in the way of horse racing. He showed a particular interest in the horse War Buoy after its sterling performance in the August Handicap, and he congratulated the trainer-driver, M. 13. Edwards, on the condition in which he had produced his charge,. Thougli a good deal of money was shut out of the machine in the early part of the day, the totalisator investments, which amounted to £21,178 10s, showed an increase of £428 10s on the £20,750 put through the machine on the first day of the corresponding meeting last year, and is the biggest amount handled on this particular day since 1930. Concluding results:—

Stewards’ Handicap, of 250 sovs; two miles—2 Sea Gift 60yds (E. J. Smith) 1, 7 Garner scr 2, 8 New: Metford scr 3. Won by half a length; two lengths between second and third. Times—4.2s 2-5, 4.30 3-5, 4.31. Queen Mary Handicap, of 250 sovs; two miles —4 Agile 24yds (G. S. Smith) 1 1, 3 Fernbrook Lass scr 2, 7 Mountain Ore 12yds 3. Won by a length; two lengths between second and third. Times—4.27 2-5, 4.29 4-5, 4.29. Selwyn Handicap, of 250 sovs; one mile and a quarter —4 Bingen Palm scr (J. R. Simpson) 1, 6 Homeward scr 2, 1 Cloudy Range 12yds 3. Won by a length; three lengths between second and third. Times —2.42 3-5, 2.42 4-5, 2.42 1-5. International Handicap, of 250 sovs; one mile —3 Sure scr (S, A. Edwards) 1, 13 Prairie King scr 2, 4 Chancellor scr 3. Won by two lengths; a head between second and third. 1 A profit of £IBO on the recent steeplechase meeting was reported to a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Hunt, over which Mr C. L. Orbell presided, it being also reported that the. ball had yielded a satisfactory profit. The New Zealand Racing Conference wrote stating that the club would receive a rebate on £7566, the amount which was passed through the totalisator. The secretary (Mr H. H, Fraser) reported that at If, per cent, the rebate would amount to about £94. It was decided to use the money to reduce the mortgage on the kennels. The question of providing uniforms for the hunt’s two honorary whips was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange next season.

FULHAM WINS STEEPLECHASE

The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting was concluded, at Caulfield today. liesults:— Australian Steeplechase, of' 1500 so vs; about three miles and a half —Fulham 10.12 (W. Sandford) 1, Character 9.0 2, Kingstol 10.3 3. All started. Won by two lengths and a half ; half a length between second and third. Time, 7.10. Balaclava Stakes, of 500 savs; one mile and three furlongs—Highardo 7.5 (S. Tomison) 1, Metro 8.5 2, Gaystar 9.2 3. There were six starters, including Bunsby Gaze. Won by half a head; two lengths between second and third. Time, 2.335. The Mirror was second in the Arkaringa Hurdles, in which Shatter was unplaced. First Song was unplaced in the St. Aubin Welter, and Membo was unplaced in the Knowsley Steeplechase. NEW ZEALANDERS AT ROSEHILL. SYDNEY, August 10. At Kosehill to-day Latharna was second and Saecula third in the Three-Year-Old Handicap, in which Golden Treasure, Parquet and Maestro were unplaced. Loud Applause was second in the Maiden Handicap. Silver Iling and Theo were unplaced in the Flying Handicap. Gladswood was third and Limoux was fourth in the Rosehill Handicap, and Golden Gate was second in the Parramatta Mile.
