SOUTH CANTERBURY WIN. BULLER. TOURING TEAM. TIMARU, July 31. Playing bright, open football, South Canterbury to-dav beat the touring Duller team by 33 points to 12. The weather was perfect. The match „ was the first between the two districts, and also the first of the visitors’ tour. The home side was always going better than the visitors, and owed its win to the superiority of the backs, whose handling was almost faultless. The home side scored a converted try in the first few minutes, and at

the interval led by 19 to 3. For a period the visitors assumed the upper hand, but South Canterbury soon settled down to sound football. Tries were scored for the winners by Morrison (3), Cartwright, Lee, Martyn, Gaffaney, Caird, and O’Sullivan. Martyn converted two and Strang one. sFor the visitors, Fairey and J. Hill scored and Holder converted one. M. Hill kicked a field goal. MAORIS TO PLAY IN DOMINION TWO MATCHES IN THE NORTH. WELLINGTON, July 31. . It was decided at a meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night that the Maori team now in Australiashould play two matches on its return, at Auckland on Saturday, August 17, and at Wellington on August 21.

Bush retained the Bebbington Shield, defeating Horowhenua by 12 to nil. The ground was very heavy. Horowhenua played with the wind in the first half, having a slight advantage territorially. There was no score at the interval. Bush dominated the second half, the backs finishing off onslaughts by the forwards. E. Lett, the half-back, playing a great game, scored two solo tries, and R. Mills and Spring one each. WAIRARAPA BEATS POVERTY BAY. MASTERTON, July 31. The Wairarapa Rugby representatives defeated the touring Poverty Bay team by 12 points to 3 in a match played here this afternoon. The visitors played solid football and put up a stout resistance, but Wairarapa was more polished and resourceful. Had the team made full use of its opportunities its winning margin would probably have been much wider.
