Auctioneer’s Business.—Mr W. H. Zouch, who has commenced business in Ashburton as an auctioneer, land, estate and commission agent, will hole his first sale at his rooms, Havelock Street, to-morrow (Saturday). Sculler Injured.—Thomas Clifford, the sculler, has his spine injured by a fall downstairs at his quarters on the Paramatta. River, and is suffering so much from pain that he is just able to get about. Mrs Cliffoid states that he will never be able to row again, and he will consider himself lucky if he is able to look after his farm add perform light work thereon. He suffers great pain in the back. Ashburton Hounds.—The meet of the Ashburton ‘Hbunds at Winchmore yesterday attracted the largest and best field of the season. By invitation several members of thgi Southern Hunt Clubs were present, including Messrs Robert, John and George Rutherford and Messrs Armitage and Brown, of Timaru. Prominent amongst those who rode close to the hounds we noticed the Master (Mr M. Stitt), Mrs Reese (Timaru), Mr and Mrs T. E. Upton, Mrs Winthrop, Mrs Davison, Miss Stewart, and Messrs J. and B. Rutherford, Brown, J. C. N. Grigg, W. B. Denshire, C. E. Mereweather, J. Corbitt, J. H. Clayton, Hewson, I. R. Graham, Coward, F. Russell, Gibson, E. Hugonin, C. Reid, J. Hunt (2), Patterson (2), Lascelles, Temple, Bunting, Reid, Heseltine, Hart, Warner, Sawle, Jephson, Wilson, Bland, R. Millar, Bonnington, Herring, and a number of others whose names we could not gather. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” July 30, 1910.) Penny-m-the-Slot Telephones. A feature of the streets in Sydney is the little sentry-box structure found here and there housing a public telephone. The telephone is run on the penny-in-therslot principle and anyone can ring up anywhere at any time if he possesses that coiiy The system brings revenue to the State and helps to protect the abuse of private telephones. When will the New Zealand Government follow suit?

Traction-engine Ploughing. Owing to unsuitable conditions traction-engine ploughing is not being undertaken in the Ashburton district just now and Mr J. Macdonald, the Government photographer, who intended to come to the district yesterday with his kinematograph apparatus, has postponed Lis visit. In the meantime he will go to Hanmer. He will take some moving pictures there and also probably in •some of the gorges and rivers on the road to the Spa. School Football.—A number of boys representing the Waitaki Boys’ High School arrived in Ashburton last evening and this morning defeated the Ashburton High School football team by 25 points to 3. Mr F.. Robilliard was referee.
