ENTERTAINMENTS.

MAJESTIC THEATRE. Mae West, most spectacular figure in the current Broadway theatrical woild, will appear finally to-night at the Majestic Theatre in “She Done Him Wrong,” a story of the Bowery, a notorious section of New York, during the gay ’nineties, with its collection of wide-open saloons, “tough men” and frivolous women. It centres around a singer known as “Lady Lou,” who has a. way with, men and who accepts then attentions in return for diamonds. Miss West appears in that role. Noah Beery is the saloon-keeper who is furnishing the jewels at tlie moment. Cary Grant is ostensibly the head of a nearby Mission, who turns out to be as susceptible to her charms as any of the natives of the district.

HAMPSTEAD JUBILEE EVENING.

Another of the popular evenings in connection with the jubilee of the Hampstead (now Ashburton East) School was held on Wednesday at the residence of Mrs H. Anderton. It took the form of a ping-pong tournament, and the winners were Miss H. Hickey and Mr L. Armstrong. The entertainment committee has arranged a soenti gathering for the older folk next Tuesday. There will bo items, dancing and cards, and ex-pupils are assured ol an enjoyable evening. LECTURE RECITAL TO-MORROW. The lecture recital by Mr V. C. Peters and the Oxford Terrace Baptist Chinch choir from Christchurch will introduce to Ashburton to-morrow evening a new type of programme wherein every item will be explained by the conductor The programme ranges from sixteentn century music . to modern-day composers, including Vaughan Williams, Hugii Robertson and Malioid Davies. Scottish Psalms, “Belmont, “French,” “Rock of Ages,” “hierce Raged the Tempest,and the now famous “Deep Harmony” are also included. The proceeds will assist the Ashburton Salvation Army Band’s new instrument fund. Miss Ada Andeison, of Christchurch, wi|U accompany the choir to Ashburton, and will render with the choir “B. W. James’s Air.’
