COUNTY CENTRES.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) highbank. The annual dance of the Highbank Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Highbank School on Friday evening, when there was a good attendance, including visitors from surrounding districts. Music was supplied by Cook’s orchestra, extras being played by Mrs E. A. Bland, Miss Ida Bland and Mr H. Bland. Messrs E. Vaughan and A. H. Sandrey were masters of ceremonies. A Monte 'Carlo waltz was won by Miss Rene Wallace and Mr J. M. Dolan, and a lucky number waltz by Mr and Mrs W. J. Dolan. The president (Mr O. Stewart) presented the championship cups won during the past season, as follows:—Ladies’ championship Vaughan Challenge Cup: Miss Ida Bland; Miss V. Simpson runnerup. Men’s championship, Sandrey Challenge Cup: H. Bland; J. M. Dolan runner-up. The Mid-Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association’s Challenge Shield, won by Highbank, was hung in the dance hail. The monthly meeting of the Highbank Women’s Institute was presided over by the president (M.rs A. HSandrey), and there was a good attendance. A most interesting demonstration of the making of paper flowers was given by Mrs E. A. Bland, and was much appreciated. A competition was held for the best buttonhole made in 10 minutes, and this was won as follows: —Seniors: Mrs J. E. Harris 1, Mrs Milne 2, Mrs W. K. Wilson 3. Juniors: Miss L. Watson 1 3 Miss Franks 2. There was a large entry for the competition for the best bloom in the garden. The results were:—Seniors: Mrs Hyland 1, Mrs F. Woods 2, Mrs C. H. Watsofi 3. Juniors : Miss B. Findlay 1,-Miss L. Watson 2, Miss R. Sandrey 3 The entries for the sultana cake competition were not so numerous, but there,was a keen contest. The results were: —Seniors: Mrs V. Mehrtens and Mrs W. K. Wilson (equal) 1, Mrs J. E. Harris 3, Mrs G. Callaghan 3. Juniors: Miss Laura Watson. The crocheted mat competition was won as follows: —Seniors: Mrs J. E. Harris 1, Mrs &. M. Milne Miss Rouse 3. Juniors: Miss D. Rouse. The hostesses were Mesdames Harris, Kneale, Law, Suckling and the Misses Ledgerwood (2), who provided a dainty afternoon tea. A short session of community singing was enjoyed.

MOUNT SOMERS The weather during the past week hag been mild and calm, with light frosts until the week-end. Two hard frosts were experienced on Monday and yesterday mornings, 18 and 23 degrees respectively being registered. Teams from the Springbuni school visited Mount Somers at the week-end and played basketball and football with the local school. The visitors won at basketball and were defeated at football. The fortnightly dance held m the school on Saturday in aid of the prize and amusement funds, was well attended. Music was supplied by Mrs W. McClimont. STAVELEY. Chicken-pox has broken out among The school children. The attendance is slightly affected-, and inter-school sports matches have had to be cancelled. Several old pupils gathered at the school recently and gave the pupils some practice at football and basketball. The Stavcley Bible Class visited Ashburton Forks to help the Rev. A. A. C. Lion to form a new class. Games were played, competitions were held, and Miss Agnes Synie and Mr Reg. Svme gave musical items. The Loyal Pioneer Lodge, M.U.I. met on Saturday evening. The N.G. <Bro-. J. King) presided. Accounts totalling £l6 were passed for payment. SEAFIELD. I The fortnightly euchre tournament was held in the Miniature Rifle Club s rooms. Mr R. Baynes controlled the games. The prizes were won by Mrs R. Baynes 1, Mrs G. Moorhead 2, Mrs R. Grice 3._ and Mr R. Shelley 1, Mr J. McDonald 2, and Mr L. Scott 3. LYNDHURST • A euchre party and dance organised by the Lyndhurst social committee was held in the hall. A tournament between Lauriston and Lyndhurst was held, Lyndhurst winning by 390 points to 378. The prizes at the cards were won by Mrs M. Molloy, Mrs E. Brooker, Mr C. iPelvin (Lauriston), and Mr E. Brooker. Messrs J. F. Franks and T. B. Greenaway controlled the cards. Music for the dancing was played by Mrs Green and Mr H. Addis. Mr A. C. Gadcl was master of ceremonies. EIFFLETON A very enjoyable function was held recently, when the Eiffelton SubBranch of the Plunket Society held a most successful ball in the Willowbj Hall The decorations which were due to the originality of Mrs Peter Shearer, were carried out in trails of greenery, in place of the usual streamers, and big clusters of multi-coloured balloons, pale green Chinese- lanterns gave finish to a beautiful fairyland ef- ' feet. The supper arrangements were left in the capable bands of Mrs J. Findlay,. who effected them deftly and efficiently. Praise is due to Mr H. H. Hawkins for the way in which he carried out his.duties of Master of Ceremonies, with the music provided by Sinclair’s Orchestra (Timaru) ensured the success of the ball. Extras were played by Mrs Hawkins and Mr Roger Ford. Mrs K. Taylor (president of

the Branch)* thanked all those present for their support and for helping to make the function a success. The funds were considerably augmented. MAYFIELD The monthly meeting of the Ma3 Tfield branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Church vestry. Mrs D. Edmond presided. The T. E. Taylor memorial day was celebrated. Tiie attention of members was drawn to the approach of the district convention meeting to be held in Ashburton.
