DEPARTURE OF TOURING TEAM.

FAREWELLED THIS MORNING

The Ashburton llugbyi Union’s senior representative team which will tour in Marlborough and Nelson in the next tortnight left for Kaikoura about 8.3 U this morning. There was a good attendance or members of the Union and well-wishers to see tbe players off, and after the president (Mr J. O'. U. Mciaichlan) Had expended best wishes for a successful trip, cheers were given for the team.

Thanking tiie Union for' the donation of two footballs, the East Ashburton School Tootbail (Jiub extended best wishes for a successful tour, and trusted tiiat tiie team would show the northern teams a good sample of Ashburton football.

THE ASHBURTON UNION.

SENIOR SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY

The Management Committee of the Ashburton Itugby Union met last evening, the president (Mr J. C. C. McLaclilan) presiding. Reporting on the match between the touring team and Linwood on Saturday, Mr' li. It. D. Porter (managei) said that play was controlled throughout by the local forwards and the Ashburton side gave promise of developing into a strong one for the tour. The attendance was not as large as was expected. The New Zealand Union advised that a maximum grant of £SO had been approved to assist with the cost of the northern tour. The Itakaia Club advised’ that it would definitely enter one team and possibly two in the proposed seven-a-side tournament.

The Springburn Club advised, that it would enter two junior teams in a sevon-a-side tournament.

The secretary (Mr G. V. Furby) stated that Allenton would enter two senior teams, and Old Boys and Methven one each.

It was agreed that it would be worthwhile to hold! such a tournament.

It was decided to hold a senior grade seven-a-side tournament on August 3, entries to closo next Monday. The Union also agreed to advise Springburn that no junior grade tourney would be held.

The Ashburton Sports Association wrote asking that due notice he given in connection' with applications for closed days on the Domain Oval. A football was granted to the Winslow School.

It was decided to ask the Methven Club if two senior players had taken part in the junior A match against Old Boys at Methven on Saturday, as reported. Mr E. S. Chambers reported that two South Canterbury representative primary school football teams would visit Ashburton on August 15 to meet the Mid-Canterbury teams.

QUEENSLAND’S FAREWELL.

BRISBANE, July 22. The Maoris were given a rousing farewell when they left Queenslan to-day. Critics claim that they have done more than any oilier touring side to popularise the Union game, and the visit thus has been a financial success. , • ' The team spent its last day in Queensland visiting farms where tropical fruits grow abundantly, and the Maoris enjoyed pineapples, \ custard, apples and pawpaws.
