DAIRY FACTORIES

CONFERENCE AT TEMUKA. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS DISCUSSED. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) TIMARU, This Day. The annual conference of representatives of dairy factories was held at Temuka on Saturday, Mr .John Dunlop, the board’s representative for the Southern ward, presided, others accompanying him being Messrs C. P. Agar (Christchurch) and T. Pointon, of the Dunedin branch of the board. The following companies were represented : Alpine and Caroline (Timaru), Ashburton, Clandoboye, Milford, Waimate, Orari, Cloverley and Temuka. (Speaking of herd-testing, Mr Agar said the board had been .asked. to take that part of tlie industry under its wing, and if placed on a national basis it could be put on a better footing and be much cheaper. This question was being discussed by the Executive Commission with the Government.

Mr Agar said I 'he could not understand the opposition in North Canterbury to the proposed appointment of dairy instructors. One could only suppose that dairy farming was an exact science, which was entirely foreign to his experience. He emphasised that by the instructors travelling from one factory to another ideas could be exchanged and good results would accrue if competent men were engaged. Mr Dunlop made it clear that the board was not satisfied with the marketing regulations as they were at present. Price fixation had been discussed with Australia, and a member- of 'the board would go there again to discuss the matter. Since Australia had fixed a minimum price for dairy produce, New Zealand would have to do the same. He did not consider the amount spent in England in advertising New Zealand produce was too much when the benefits received were taken into account. A free discussion then took place after the address. Messrs Robert McDowell (Ashburton) and H. H. Meredith (Waunate) were elected to represent the ward at the Dominion conference. Mr B. Downes (Milford) was elected to represent the district at the conference.
