THE TURF.
THE KING’S JOCKEY. Joe Childs, first jockey to the King, celebrated his fifty-first birthday on Silver Jubilee Day. Childs was born in France, living there seven years. He then went to England, and was 10 years of age when he rode his first winner. Childs has ridden the winner of every classic race in England, and was also successful in the German Derby. In England bis wins m classics are ; Derby.: Fifinella, Gainsborough, and Coronach. Two Thousand Guineas: Gainsborough and Cameraman. One Thousand: Scuttle and Brown Betty. Oaks: Mirska, Fifinella, Bayada, and Love in Idleness. iSt. Leger: Gainsborough, Poleniarch, Solario, and Coronach. SUPPORT FOR SYNAGOGUE. So persistent has been the support for Synagogue in a Caulfield Cup connection that he is straight-out favourite in Sydney for the Melbourne event. Since the weights appeared Synagogue
has been in strong demand. • In both Sydney and Melbourne he was coupled in doubles, chiefly with the champion, Peter Pan. Leading bookmakers in Sydney voiced the opinion that the move was not inspired by the stable. Synagogue, who dead-heated with Ilieros in the Futurity Stakes in February last, has 8.13—0 r lib under weight-for-age—in the Caulfield Cup. Hs also is engaged in the Epsom, Metropolitan, and Melbourne Cup, and most New Zealanders Avould prefer to back him in the Epsom, run over a mile, than in the Caulfield Cup with an additional half-mile to cover. When the stable gets to work it is probable that they will select the Epsom or the Cantala Stakes.
