Mr Wiley Post's fourth attempted transcontinental stratosphere flight failed when.he made a forced landing here because of motor trouble after a flight X rom Angeles. Mr Post's declared object is to make e. seven-hour flight from Los Angeles to New York in his world-famous Winnie May, a Lockhead Vega specially equipped 'for flying' in the rarified upper atmosphere. In February, making his first attempt, he was forced down after travelling 125 miles, investigation disclosing the presence of steel filings and emery in his engine. In March he made a second attempt which ended, after he had covered 2163 miles at an average of 280 m.p.h., when his oxygen supply gave out. His third attempt failed when he was forced down near Lafayette (Indiana), through a defect .in one of his superchargers after bejng in the air for eight hours and covering 2000 miles.
