BASKETBALL.
MATCHES ON SATURDAY. The Ashburton Basketball Association's competitions were continued on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine but cold, and the courts were soft following a fair amount of rain during the week. There was some high scoring during the afternoon. Two innovations which hid fair to improve the running of the competitions* were made. The first was th 6 starting of all games simultaneously by the use of a bell. The end of the first spell, the beginning of the second, and the final time were all similarly signalled, and even for the first occasion the system worked well. The second was the holding of the Referees' Association meeting at 4.10 o'clock in the pavilion. A larger number than usual was present and some three-quarters of an hour was spent in discussing points in the rules and the control of games. This meeting wilt , take—experimentally, sat -any rate-—the place of the usual fortnightly meeting. Results were as follow: Senior Grade. Tinwald 16, St. Stephen's 10; Technical Old Girls A 16, High School Old Girls 4; S. Andrew's 11, Chertsey 8: Technical Old Girls B 9, High School 7; Convent Old Girls a bye. junior Grade. St. Stephen' ST-Tinwald opened the attack, but on the ball reaching the forward third the only result was unsuccessful shots on the part of two of Tinwald's forwards. Good concerted work by St. Stephen's turned the tide in their favour, hut again the attack broke down at the goal. iScoring opened with a penalty goal shot by Miss Bi. Opie (St. Stephen's). Working well together again St. Stephen's added one, and on the return of the ball to Tinwaid's end
Miss Forsyth, who throughout proyeo to be rather off her game, missed twice. A bout of rather feeble high passing max-red St. Stephen's nest effort and two of their forwards each missed twice at easy distance. On one of .these occasions the" bail bounced three times on the top of the post and then failed to "go m.~ Miss Forsyth then scored lor 'Jmwald and a period of up-and-dOvvn play followed, till half-way through the rirst spell, when scores were evened (two ail). Miss vVallia then took a hand, followed by Miss MeGee till the score read 5-3 in favour of {it. Stephen's. Still playing well as a team St. Stephen's were nanipered by more unsuccessful shots, till a good feint deceived Tinwald's deienus and another goal was put on, the fii&o spell ending nye all. Within tne first minute of reopening Miss McJ-ee, 'who was playing ws»tjciass basketball. jvvfljs ,sucices>ui m notching one, putting her team in the lead. Miss Waiiis evened, but Miss McUee again found the ring. Tinwald 7, St. Stephen's 6. Excellent team work resulted again in Miss MeGee netting the ball, but fct. Stephen's replied and Miss Opie scored. 8.7. The game continued in the very best oi spirits, though keen throughout, and about half-way through the second spell barracking began and the game became even speedier. Tinwaid's defence wasi also working well, especially at this stage, and when St. Stephen's reached 10 they were prevented from getting any" more, while Tinwald went on to pile up a total of 16. "Mrs-Cowan was referee. , Technical O.G. A. v. High School O.G.—This game opened briskly indeed and for the first five minutes particularly was played at quite tournament speed. Miss Smith opened tor High School and was rapidly followed by Miss J. McMillan for Technical High School, playing with plenty oi dash, held their redoubtable opponents well, attack being vigorous and defence determined, but team work gradually told, and the half-time score was 5-1. Miss J. McMillan was responsible for three, and Mrs Holland and Miss Ooldicott one each. i_„«, Tl In the second spell team work began to tell heavily. High School stuck gamely to their task in the face. ot a gradually-piling score Miss Smith again opened the score but put on toui and Miss Coldicott two before Mis* Smith was again successful. The honours were then shared, Miss Buchanan scoring and Miss Segers putting in the most spectacular shot of the day. Ibe game tended with play decidedly in Technical's favour, the team's defence being successful again and again in making good clearances, and with tut Sore 16 to 5 the final whistle sounded. Mr S. G. Macfarlane was referee. High School v. Technical O.G. 15. Technical opened the score with two in the first three minutes Miss m. Woods then scoring for school. Good defence by School fended off two lechnical attacks, Miss Cornish being pidminent. Another Technical attack tailed by reason of poor shooting, and so a rather ragged game continued at half-time School were fading 4 to d. On resuming, High School again attacked, but good Technical defence Miss knight being outstanding, turned the movement again and again Maliway through the second spell School were still holding their own at five-all. From here on, mostly because, of.lack of cohesion in the High School team. Technical gradually got the gpper hand and the final score was 9-7 in their ia y °MiBS N. Buchanan was referee.
