Ashburton Guards.—The roll of the Ashburton Guards closed on Saturday evening with 55 names, and the services' of the company have been offered the Defence Minister. Fairfield Returns.—The analysis [ of the returns of the stock slaughtered at the Fairfield abattoir during April are as follow: Cows 14 (two passed for canning purposes), bullocks or heifers 35, calves 2, pigs 65 (including six for export), sheep 1034 (four wholly and two partially condemned), lambs 88. . Willowby Debating Society.-—At the usual meeting of the Willowby literary and Debating Society last evenirig, Mr W. T. Lill occupied the chair.. Two new members were elected. The subject of the evening's debate was: "Is. Com-, pulsory Military Training Desirable?" Mr U W. Harding, assisted by Mr F. W. Crossman bid Mr W. T. Lill, junior, took tie affirmative, and Mr G. H. B. Lill, assisted by Mr J. Watson and Miss J. Lill, 'the negative, which received a large majority of votes. Breeding of Trotters,—Mr J. Farrell, of Hinds, has distinguished himself in the breeding of trotters. Since settling at the Hinds, Mr Farrell bred the trotter Dan Fatch, by Rothschild, from Ruahine. After training the horse, Mr Farrell sold Dan Patch to the Allandale Stock Company, the present owners, for £350, and since then the horse has put up a workTs record.
