THE DAVIS CUP CONTEST. THE NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. When the Australian tennis team arrived at Bournemouth (where it will play New Zealand in the first round of the Davis Cup contest) the only persons to welcome the players at the station were officials of the Lawn Tennis Association and E. D. Andrews, of the New Zealand team. . • Andrews told a representative of the Australian Press association that A. C. Stedman and C. E. Malfroy will play in the singles against Australia, The pair for the doubles has not yet been chosen. Andrews has recovered from his sprained ankle.
The New Zealand! team is being coached in London. The Australians will go to Eastbourn© on Saturday to practise for the cup-tie.
BRITISH HARDCOURT TOURNEY (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. The British hardcourt tennis championship tournament was continued at Bournemouth to-day. Results:— Men's Singles—Third round: H. W. Austin defeated! Avery, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2; N. S. Farquharson (South Africa) beat H. G. N. Lee (England), 10-8, 6-4, 6-1; D. D. Prenn (Germany) beat Sharpe (England), 7-5, 6-2, 6-1; F. J. Perpy '(England) beat Peters, 7-5, 6-3, 9-7. Men's 'Doubles—First round: Farquharson and V. G. Kirby beat Sharpe and Tuckey, 4-6, 9-7, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3; Perry and Butler beat W. Henderson and Lysaght, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Women's Singles —Third round: Miss K. Stammers beat Mrs H. O. Hopman (Australia), 6-4, 6-3; Mrs FearnleyWhittingstall beat Senorita Lieant (Spain), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Women's Doubles —'Mrs Pittman and Miss Corke beat Mrs Hopman (Australia) and Miss Ford, 6-4, 6-2.
Mixed Doubles—Second round l : Prenn and Miss Dearman (England) beat Peters and Mrs Peters, 7-5, 6-4.
