ASHBURTON CELEBRATIONS.

FUNCTIONS FOR NEXT MONDAY.

TREE-PLANTING, FOOTBALL, BONFIRE.

THE iSCHOOL CHILDREN'S PART. Functions set down for Monday for the Ashburton celebration of the Sirver Jubilee of King George's accession to the Throne will be the planting of a tree in the Domain by the Mayoress (Mrs W. H. Woods), a representative football match, Town v. Country, on the Oval, and a bonfire in the evening. The Mayoress will plant a copper beech in a plot near the bowling green at 2 o'clock arid this ceremony, at which the people of Ashburton are invited to attend, will be followed by brief addresses by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) and the chairman of the Reserves Committee (Mr E. H. Orr). The football match will commence at 2.45 o'clock.

The postponed trotting meeting at Methven will be held on Monday, commencing at 11.30 o'clock. There are eight events on the programme and the last event is timed to start at 4.15 o'clock. This will be one of only two race meetings that are to be held in the Dominion on Monday, the other being at For bury Park. An endeavour was being made to promote a hockey five-a-side tourney to be played in the Ashburton Domain but most players are taking advantage of the holiday. The Borough Council is assisting the Boy Scouts to build a bonfire on the section next to the Library, and this will be set alight at 7 o'clock on Monday evening. This fire will be one in a chain that the Scouts are building throughout the Dominion. An appeal for material for the fire is being made by the Council. Decorations in Borough. Decorations on public and private buildings is being carried out at the present time, a good deal of bunting and flags being already in evidence, while strings of electric lights will be hung on the Borough Council Chambers and Library and on the County Council Chambers. These decorations will remain in place throughout next week. The Children's Celebration.

With the aid of the Government and the local bodies in Ashburton, the school children will be able to celebrate the jubilee with functions of- their own, and all these *fill be held on Friday of next week. The Allenton School ceremony will commence at 1.30 o'clock. Items will be given by the pupils, and will include folk-dancing. Each child will receive refreshments, fruit and milk, and a badge containing a portrait of the King and the Queen. Two framed photographs of their Majesties will be unveiled in the school and the Ven. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie will address the pupils on the significance of the jubilee. Parents of pupils and others interested are invited to attend. They will be entertained at afternoon tea. One of the pupils will recite a special poem. The Allenton School Committee has written to the Ashburton County Council asking for an increase in the grant made to the school, so that the full amount available will be Is a head, as has been done in the Borough, where the Borough Council has given 8d to each child. If the increased grant is made to Allenton, the committee will purchase a new flag and place a flagpole in the grounds. The Ashburton Technical High, Ashburton East, Borough, and Convent 'School pupils will attend special matinees which are to be held at the Majestic Theatre in the morning and in the afternoon. This will absorb 4d for each child of the primary schools, hd each will go in badges, and the remaining 6d of the grant of" Is will be used to purchase library books at the Borough arid Convent Schools and pictures for Ashburton East. The surplus at the Technical High School will be used toward the placing of an honours board in the school.

Pupils of the Ashburton High School will hold a jubilee dance on Monday evening and the balance of their grant (6u)" will be used to purchase books for the school library. The arrangements regarding the entertainment of the school children and the allocation of funds have been made by the Mayor and* the County Chairman (Mi- D. J. Morrow), the Town Clerk (Mr W. Patterson) and the County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) in consultation with the headmasters and chairmen of committees of the several schools.
