SEDITION IN INDIA.
THIRTY-ONE MEN CONVICTED. PLOTTING OF ARMED RISINGS. (United Press Association—Copyright). CALCUTTA, May 1. After a trial lasting nearly two years, during which 500 witnesses were examined, 31 men were convicted byi a special tribunal at Calcutta on a charge of conspiracy to wage war against the King. Six of the accused were sentenced to life transportation, three to ten years' imprisonment, nine to seven years' imprisonment and the remainder to from six to one year. Four were acquitted, but two of these were immediately rearrested under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, while two who turned King's evidence were pardoned. ' The conspiracy was described as aimed to promote simultaneous armed risings throughout India and Burma, to facilitate which men were Tecruited and. arms, explosives and funds obtained through widespread robberies and murders.
