Rifle Volunteers.—The Ashburton Rifle Volunteers have invited the members of the Ashburton County Council to become honorary members of the corps. The chairman (Mr W. C. Walker) recommended the invitation to the favourable consideration of the members. School Football Match.—A football match was played in the Domain on Thursday atterOoon between the High and Borough School Clubs, resulting in a victory for the former by 11. points to nil. Formation of Main South Road.— The Ashburton Comity Council has decided to request the Government for a grant to carry out the formation of the Main South Road between Winslovy and Ealing. Hospital Returns. —The following are the Ashburton Hospital returns for the month of April:—in hospital first of month, 9; admitted, 9; discharged, 8 ; remaining in the hospital on 30th, 10. •

Bog Licenses.—The Ashburton County Council has issued 884 dog licenses this year. , *

Vital Statistics.—'The vital statistics for the registration district of Ashburton for the month of April are as follow :—Births, 24; deaths, 15; marriages, 7. For the corresponding month last year the figures were: —-"Births, 29; deaths, 9; marriages, 9. Mothers’ Union. —The Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Mothers’ Union held its annual meeting yesterday, when the president (Mrs G. B. Inglis) was in the chair. The followr ing officers were elected:—President, Mrs G. B. Inglis; vice-president, Mrs Baker; secretary, Mrs W. Roberts; assistant secretary, Mrs G. Thompson. Rakaia Hockey Club.—At the annual'meeting of the Rakaia Ladies’ Hockey Club the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Miss Buller; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. W. Holmes, W. Coath, E. Richards, T. Richards, and W. A. Strachan; secretary, Miss F. Smith; treasurer, Miss A. Liddy; captain, Miss C. Richards; vice-captain, Miss A. Edgington; committee, Misses A. Edgington, A. Cromie, A. Liddy, O. Richards, and R. Cordner; selection committee, Messrs J. Thompson and ' W. Sturgiss. Loan and Investment Society.—The first annual general meeting of .the Ashburton Loan and Investment Society and Bank of Deposit was held last evening, when there was a satisfactory attendance of members, and the chairman of the Board of Directors (Mr W. H. Rule) presided. The balance- ' sheet showed a profit on the year’s working of £llO 9s 2d. and the directors recommended the payment of six > per cent, on all shares. Messrs James •Cow and W. Bryant, who . retired by ~ efluxion of time, were tlie only candidates for the vacancies on, the directorate, and were thus re-elected. At a subsequent meeting of directors Mr W. H. Rule was re-appointed chairman, and Mr F. "W. Watt auditor.
