BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
DECISIONS OF THE COUNCIL. CONSERVING WATER SUPPLY. The Ashburton Borough. Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), Messrs J. Thompson, W. H. Rundle, E. Buchanan, A. L. Jones, J. T. Pratley, F J. E. Smallbone, H. R. C. McE.lrea, W. H. Robinson, E. H. Orr, R. Kerr and Dr. J. Connor. The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £1264 12s 6d, the chief items being rates £23 13s 9d (current), £l9 7s 2d (arrears), rents £39 4s Bd, water supplies £3 10s, abattoir fees £7l 2s Id, licenses £B, fixed deposits returned £IOOO. The Ashburton County Council wrote in reply to the Council's letter regarding the conservation of the supply of water in the Ashburton River, that the present proposal to draw additional supply for the Methven district need not cause any concern as the quantity of water in the north branch at Pudding Hill Bridge was 149 cusecs, and the proposal was to divert approximately lo cusecs into the new race. The Borough's representations would receive full consideration in the event of the proposals being considered to utilise any large quantity of water tor irrigation purposes.' 'Mr Mcßlrea said that the County Engineer was to present a report on the" position, and further comment might be held over till then.
Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator on work carried out by his staff in the past two weeks. Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which showed that there was a credit balance of '£26 4a Sd. Receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £8 7s 6d.
