KING'S JUBILEE

THE MALVERN HILLS.

SAVED FOR POSTERITY.

PILGRIMS' TRUST GENEROSITY. (United Press Association+-Copjyrigh.t.) LONDON, April 27 The southern portion oi : the Malvern Hills, which Mr Baldwin recently described as having the "most beautiful silhouette in Britain," is to. be preserved from all danger of spoilation by a national trust scheme made possible by the generous attitude of local landowners and by contributions from tho Pilgrims' Trust and Midland Counties' Trust funds. The Pilgrims' Trust, the dual purpose of which is to "advance the wellbeing of the people" and to assist in the preservation and restoration of "many tilings in England which are abundantly worth preserving," is commemorating the King's jubilee by contributions of £4500 to the Malvern Hills scheme and £2500 toward restoring Little Dean's Yard, Westminster, to its original dignity, as well as by giving £SOOO to the King's Jubilee Ti-ust.—British Official Wireless.

THE KING'S NEW CAR.

LARGEST IN THE WORLD. LONDON, April 29. The King's new motor-car for the jubilee and other State occasions is the world's largest private car, having a wbeelbase of 156 inches and a track of 4G inches. It carries no number-plates. A small lamp emits a violet light, distinguishing the Royal car at night, Tho Royal standard flies from a socket in the roof when the King is aboard.

, SCHOOL CELEBRATION'S. A COMMITTEE'S OBJECTIONS. WELLINGTON, April 29. Believing it would be more suitable to purchase something tangible, such as books for the reference library or something permanent in form, the Johnsonville School Committee resolved: "That we believe spending money in the way outlined in the Education Board's circular on April 11 regarding the silver jubilee of the King is a wasteful and useless way of marking so notable an occasion. This committee refuses to accept money for disposal in that manner, but will be pleased to expend the amount upon some object that would permanently mark the occasion."

THE ASHBURTON EAST SCHOOL.

PICTURES AS COMMEMORATION. "The Canterbury Education Bbard's grant of 4d per pupil to celebrate the King's jubilee is being subsidised generously by the Ashburton Boroagh Council so that Is a head is available." said the headmaster of the Ashburton East School (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) at the meeting of the committee last evening. "It is proposed to expend (kl of this amount on a suitable moving picture show on May 10 (4d) and the giving to each.child of a commemorative button (2d). "The other 6d (amounting in total to-about £11)," continued Mr Macfarlane, ''is to be expended on something permanent at the school. Our suggestion is a large concrete sand-pit with a suitable commemorative plaque." The chairman (Mr W. S. Kerr) recommended the purchase of some books for the library, but the headmaster pointed out that there was no central library in the school and books would have to be available in each class. The sand-pit would be more permanent than books and would cater for the lower division of the school which was often neglected.

The procuring of some pictures and the provision of a barometer were other suggestions put forward byi-members.

On. the motion of Messrs W. J. Miller and H. Money, it was decided to spend the money on suitable pictures for the school, it being stated that the cost of the construction of a sand-pit would be prohibitive to such a scheme.
