ASHBURTON EAST.
MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE INCIDENTAL GRANT INCREASED. The Ashburton East School Committee met last evening, when inhere were present Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman), W. J. Miller, H. W. Sherratt, W. H. Hobinson, O. G-. Dellow, S. Groves, E, H. Childs and H. Money.
The Canterbury Education Board advised that after further consideration it had decided! that it could not make a grant toward the rent of the hall made necessary through increases in the roll at the school An account for £6 10s was received from the Hampstead Hall Society, and it was decided to forward this to the Board with a further request for assistance.
The headmaster (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) reported that of the five weeks since last meeting, six days had been holidays. The roll for the four weeks had been 441, 441, 443 and 439, and the attendances 421, 423, 428 and 420, the percentages being 95.4, 95,9, 96.6 and 95.6 respectively. Miss I. Totty had left the staff after haying rendered good service to the school. The Education Board's supply of hand-work material amounted to a fraction only of what was requisitioned and the need for much more was urgent. Purchases had been made to supplement the Board's issue. The recent school fair had been most successful and £3o' had been, raised.
It was reported that the committee's grant for incidental expenses from the Education Board this year represented an increase of £l2, compared with, last year.
Messrs Robinson and Sherratt were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
