KING APPROVES THE DESIGN,

AN INTERESTING ANNIVERSARY. THE FIRST ADHESIVE STAMP. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 11.65 a.m.) 'LONDON, April 23. The King has approved the design of the .Jubilee stamps—halfpenny, penny, three-halfpence and twopencehalfpenny. They will be available for two months from May 7. They have been designed by Barnett Freeman, and are twice the size of the ordinary stamps. The colours are not changed, but the photogravure process strongly contrasts the light shade. The head of the King is Sir Bertram Mackennal's design. The symbols include laurel and oak leaves, acorns, olive branches and the Royal orown. Jubilee Day will be the anniversary of the introduction of the first adhesive stamp in 1840, of which only 416,000 could be printed daily, compared With. 15,000,000 nowadays. Specially-designed postal orders are also being printed.
