FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "Guardian," April 24, 1885.) Ashburton Debating Society.—The annual meeting of the Ashburton Debating Society was held m the Arcade Chambers last evening. About a dozen members were present, and Mr H. Craighead, the ' president, occupied the chair. The secretary (Mr J. U. Kobertson) read the balance T sheet, showino- that the liabilities had bevii reduced to £l IV s iUd, which was regarded; as satisfactory. The balancesheet was adopted, and' the retiring officers were awarded a vote of thanks* Before the election of officers was proceeded with, Mr J. A. Cay gill spoke in favour of the formation or a Parliamentary Union. After some discussion, Mr Caygill gave notice of motion that at next meeting he would move that the society be resolved into a Parliamentary Imion. The following gentlemen were then elected members:— Messrs Sim, R. Clark,, G. W. Andrews, Clayton, and Flesher. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr Caygill; vice-presidents, Messrs E. Moss, G. Jameson, and D. Thomas; secretary and treasurer, Mr E, Fooks.; committee, Messrs H. Craighead, J. C. Duncan, C. Hogg. Robertson, and Farley. The arrangements for the. first meeting on Friday, May 8, were left in the hands of the committee. A vote of thanks to the chair cohcluded the business. Ministerial.—. The Rev. A. Blake, M.A., will preach in the Presbyterian Church, Ashburton, on Sunday morning, and the Rev. J. Elmslie, M.A., of Christchurch, will conduct the evening service.

TW/ENTY-FIVE YEARS ACQ. (From "Guardian," April 24, 1910.) Horticultural Society. The adjourned annual meeting of the Ashburton Horticultural Society. had to be further postponed last evening in coiir sequence of there being no quorum. The Dairying Industry.—in connection with the Ashburton Central Dairy Factoryi Company, it is understood that the provisional directors have decided to proceed with the registration of the company at once, and with the allotment of shares as soon as the registration has been completed. Altogether 3000, of a total of 5000 to be allotted, have been applied for, and further applications are ; coming in daily. Large increases of cows are reported from various districts, mainly at Anama. Creameries will be erected at Lowcliffe, Hinds and Anama> and it is understood that there is a probability of another creamery being built at a later stage in the vicinity of Lagmhor. The prospects of the successful flotation of the company are daily increasing, and there is ample evidence of the settled desire on the part of the people to promote and foster the industry. . Congestion at Fairfield.—-A special train, consisting of empty meat vans, passed through Ashburton to Fairfield on Sunday morning to relieve the congestion that is being experienced. It is reported that the works are taxed to their utmost capacity to deal with the sheep in- hand.
