TENNIS SENSATION
MENZEL LEAVES THE COURT.
ANNOYED BY SPECTATORS.
AFTER MISSING A VOLLEY.
(United Press Association-Copyright) (Received This Day 1.35 p.m.) LONDON, April 22.
H. C. Hopmaii, the “Sun-Herald” correspondent at Rome, says that It. Merizel (Czechoslovakia) created a sensation by walking off the centre couft when he was leading from Palmieri (Italy) at the Italian lawii tennis championships, refusing to return. Palinieri returned, an apparently certain winner from Menzel, who missed the volley and gesticulated to heaven. A section of the gallery began whistling, but ceased when Menzel spoke to the umpire, who appealed for silence. Menzel waited at the umpire’s chair for complete silence. Laughing broke out. Menzel then marched off without saying a word to the umpire. Palinieri, who had been a passive spectator, collected his racquets and left the court. Borotra and officials attempted to persuade Menzel to return, but after 20 thihuteS the uinpire announced that Menzel had retired, adding that Menzel said ho had nothing against the public. H© would have liked to return but as he had a Test he thought it would be fairer to his opponent to scratch.
