“THE KING’S GRACE.”
MR BUCHAN’S NEW BOOK. TRIBUTE TO HIS MAJESTY. LONDON, April 16. “Since Tudor days ■ the phrase has been ‘the King’s Majesty,’ but to-day, the older form, ‘the King’s Grace,’ is more fitting.”
In a silver jubilee book, entitled “The King’s Grace,” Mr John Buchan, M.P., Governor-General-designate of Canada, makes that comment in a tribute to the King’s personality and work for the nation and Empire throughout his reign. “The King to-day,’ ’ says Mr Buchan, “is far more a people’s King than Edward or Henry, returned triumphant from French wars. His quick sympathy and kindliness have w r armed the country, and] done something to warm the chilly world. When its nerve has been breaking, his steadfastness has restored it, and when strife has been fermenting, he has spoken a healing word.
“With the Queen’s and his family’s assistance he has made Britain not only his nation, but his household. The King has shown himself a leader by evoking what is best in his people.”
Mr Buchan, referring to the Empire, emphasises the . tremendous meaning of the Crown. The book summarises events of the reign, especially the war, of which the author considers the story of Gallipoli, to be one of the noblest and most cruel, for it could and should have succeeded, thus shortening the war by months and years.
