RIFLE SHOOTING.
OTAGO EASTER PRIZE-FIRING. ASHBURTON MARKSMEN COMPETE. Marksmen from the Ashburton Defence Rifle Club competed with some success at the Otago Rifle Association’s sixty-first annual Easter prize-firing at Dunedin. Opening the meeting, Colonel E. R. Smith leferred to the death of Rifleman F. Clark, of Ashburton, a wellknown competitor at former meetings. In the Southland match of 300 yards Rifleman J. Bishop scored 47 and won 10s, and Rifleman N. Bauerle, with 46, won the same money. With a 47 in the Canterbury! match of 500 yards, Bauerle won another 10s prize and Rifleman G. Cromie received 5s for a score of 46. Bauerle won the Central Otago match (600 yards) with 48 and secured £2 10s. Rifleman D. Doak (in the tyros) put up 42 and won 10s. The Otago match of 300 yards saw Cromie score 47 and win 15s. In the Service Match, Bauerle recorded 24 (rapid), 18
(snap), 42 (total) to win 15s. Competing in the North Otago match of 500 yards, Rifleman A. Donn won 15s when he scored 48, and Doak 10s foi the same score. The 'South Canterbury match (600 yards) saw Bishop put up 48 to win £1 10s and Cromie 46 to gain 10s. Cromie, with an aggregate of 137, won 10s in the Kaitangata aggregate, which was won with a 140 total. The Otago championship went to a rifleman with a total of 278, and Bauerle won £1 with a tally of 273. Bauerle tied, with 48, 44—02, in the 600 yard.? aggregate. Cromie and Bauerle were members of the Canterbury provincial team which defeated Otago by 1348 to 1315. In the first three matches, Bauerle was one point behind the leader in the aggregate. He had 141 points. Ashburton held fourth place in the teams' aggregate with 648, the leading combination having a total of 665.
