THE YEAR'S OPERATIONS. SUCCESSFUL PERIOD REVIEWED. MEMBERS' ANNUAL MEETING. •The fifty-seventh annual meeting of the Ashburton Agricultural aiid Pastoral Association was held this afternoon, the president (Mr A. P. Bruce) presiding over a large attendance. The annual report was as follows:
"In submitting the annual report and balance-sheet for the past year, the committee desires to congratulate members on the results of the year's operations. . "Finance—The financial position ot the association remani* most satisfactory., and the balance-sheet shows that the year commenced with a credit balance to general account of £l9O 10s 2d, and after transferring £SO to fixed deposit (making £200) and spending nearly £SO on improvements in the produce shed, the sum of £123 3s 6d is carried forward. The committee went into the question of valuation of assets during the year, and as shown in tlie balance-sheet, the sum of £7OO has been written off as depreciation on show grounds and improvements. "Annual Show—The annual show, held on November 1, was one of the most successful yet held, the entries constituting another record for the association. The quality of the exhibits was quite up to the high standard of previous years. "Horse Parade—The annual horse parade was held on September 25, nine entries being received. In connection with the parade, demonstrations were given by Mr J. Lukey, M.R.C.V.S., on "The Draught Horse," and Mr J. ILGrigg on "The Corriedale." "Ram Fair—The annual ram fair, held on March 22, was well supported. "Fat Lamb Competition—The district competition in export lambs was held on December 14 and brought forward exceptionally good entries. The Canterbury Frozen Meat Co.'s challenge cup and also the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association's prizes were won by Mr C. Sewell. The Association's prizes were won by Messrs A. P. Bruce, S. H. Lill and Alington Bros.
"Flock Ewe Competition.—On account of insufficient entries, the competition was cancelled. "Junior Membership—The committee decided during the year to admit young people under 21 years of age as junior members at a fee of 10s 6d, but only one junior member has been elected.
"Obituary—The association suffered the loss by death of two of its oldest members in the persons of Colonel J. Studholme, D. 5.0., a past president, and Mr F. Z. D. Fernman, both of whom had rendered valuable service.
"Presentation of Cups—The annual presentation of cups was largely attended by members and their wives. The musical programme supplied by Mrs R. A. Oakley and party was much appreciated by those present. "Officers—Now that the cost of building is so low, the president considers it advisable for the finance committee to thoroughly investigate the cost of building and financing up-to-date premises for the use of the committee and staff."
The report concluded with appreciative reference to the assistance of the newspapers, the work of the secretary (Mr W. H. Amos) and his staff, and of the treasurer (Mr Andrew Brown). The retiring president said that such assistance' was indispensable to the smooth running of the association. '.'On my retirement as president," said Mr Bruce, "I desire on behalf of the association to thank judges, donors of cups and special prizes, exhibitors, stewards, and other officials at the recent show for their valuable assistance, to extend my own personal appreciation to members of the committee for their co-operation during the year, and also to the past presidents for their kindly help and advice." The statement of receipts and expenditure was as follows:—Receipts: Credit balance £l9O 10s 2d, entry feag £323 12s 6d, space £6O Bs, special prizes £99 9s, gate money £316 18s 6d, luncheon privileges £l2 10s, members' subscriptions £3OB 14s 6d, horse parade £2 ss, ram fair £4O 10s Bd, export iamb competition £165 4s, rents £32 13s 6d, social £3 16s, firewood £l4, interest on fixed deposit £4 10s; total, £1575 Is lOd. Expenditure: Prize money £646 13s 6d, printing and advertising £65 10s 3d, catering £25 10s od, judges' expenses £23 14s 3d, rent and rates £37 3s lid, repairs and maintenance £54 3s Bd, labour £B7 7s Bd, ram fair £9 15s sd, export lamb competition £176 19s Bd, horse parade £1 2s, secretary's salary £l5O, insurances £2O 7s Bd, cups and engraving £ll lis 3d, audit fees £6 6s, bands £9, telephones, * portages, and petty cash £4l 14s 9d, sundry general expenses £34 17s lOd, transfer to fixed deposit £SO, credit balance £123 3s 6d; total, £1575 Is lOd. A balance of £4291 15s was shown in the profit and loss account, assets were shown as £5574 2s Bd, and there were no liabilities.
Mr J. H. Grigg suggested that, in the preparation of future balancesheets, a comparison with the association's financial position for the preceding few years be made. It would give the members an idea of how the association was progressing, he said. It was decided to act upon, the suggestion.
The matter of holding a two-day show was mentioned, but met with no support. Mr J. H. Grigg remarked that it was better "to have one good day than two days dragged out, and expressed the opinion that several farmers who now sent in exhibits would not do so if the animals were to be "kept for two days. Mr Hunter Morris also considered that it would not be in the best interests of the association to hold a two-day show. There was no election of officers, as the nominations for the various posts did not exceed the number of vacancies Those declared elected were:—
