LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Mar.. 26, 1885.) ' Building and Investment Society.— The tenth annual meeting of the Ashburton Permanent Building and Investment Society was held in -the Arcade Chambers yesterday. There was a fair attendance, and Mr J. E. Trey or (chairman of the Board of Directors) presided. The annual report stated that the .result "of the year's operations must be: eminently satisfactory to the shareholders. The profit and loss account showed the satisfactory credit balance of £595" 15s 10d. which had 1 been allocated to "A" capital and "B" capital investment shares. The balance to the credit of the reserve fund was £lO7 14s 6d. During the year "A" capital shares had been taken up to the value of £lOlO, making the total amount of the capital £SOOO. The retiring directors were Messrs T. Bullock and Hugo Friedlander, and they offered themselves for re-election. A vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation to. the managing director (Mr Joseph Ward), members attributing the success of the company's operation to this gentleman's untiring care. • TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Mar. 26, 1910.) High School Sports.—ln connection with the Ashburton High School sports on Thursday the senior cup was won by Keith Rollitt with a total number of 31 points, L. Rountree, with 271 points being runner-up. Rollitt was last year's winner. W. Digby, with 20 points, secures the junior cup for the vear, A. McDonald, 17| points being runner-up. Last year's holder of the junior cup was C. Turner. * 4 Teacher, for Borough School.—The,. Board of Education submitted, the names of four applications forth? position of assistant mistress at.the Borough School, and the committee has decided to recommend Miss Grace Makeig, an old pupil of thfe school; for appointment to the New Bank at Methven.—Messrs. Peter Gourdie and Sons, who. are the successful tenderers for the Bank of New Zealand premises at Methven will commence their contract on Tuesday next. The building is to be erected in brick, and will include banking offices and a private residence. .•.
