FARMERS UNION
MID-CANTERBURY EXECUTIVE. FREEZING COMPANIES HOLD SKIN'S. FORTHCOMING CONFERENCE. The Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union met this afternoon, the president (Mr Raymond Oakley) presiding. Replying to the executive’s letter in connection with the right of farmers to lift the skins of their sheep and lambs killed at freezing works, the Dominion Executive stated that . the South Island Freezing Companies’ Association considered the question to be one for individual companies. The Southland Frozen Meat and Produce Export Co., 'lrtd., stated that its practice was to take over the skins at a monthly valuation, based on the highest values the company was 'able to give. Only in a very few cases had the price offered' not been accepted. . The New Zealand Refrigerating Coim pany wrote stating that it was only able to accept stock for killing on the understanding that it carried out the fellmongering of the skins. If farmers took away their sheep skins the disorganisation would involve additional cost at the works and would tend to increase the freezing charges. Advice was received that the Dominion president of the Union (Mr W. J. Poison, M.P.) would visit Ashburton on Thursday, June 6. It was decided to state that a luesday or Friday would be more convenient for the meeting. Messrs J. Carr and W. R. Hammond recommended that the Dominion Executive should undertake the issue of propaganda on behalf of the farmers of New Zealand in connection witn public questions such as the Mortgage Corporation Bill. . The Mid-Canterbury Provincial Exe- . cutive of the Women's Division of the Union suggested that an inter-provin-cial conference of the Union be Aeld id Timaru in March, 1936 to be attended by representatives of the North, ALa and South Canterbury executives It was stated that the womens division was organising an interprovincial co ference on the same lines to be held at Timaru at this time. The letter was received. It was decided to invite representatives. of the North and South Canteibury provincial executives to attend a conference in Ashburton on April 5, when matters relative to the organisation ox the Union and others oi Common interest will be discussed. , A committee consisting of the president and Messrs G. A* Franks, C. C. Winn, J. Carr, W. It- Hammond, F. Fraxnpton, F. G. Evans, and A. ir. Bruce was set up to arrange the conference, and to act as a finance committee.
