LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” March 19, 1885.) \ Special Examination.—The Ashburton School Committee have decided to request the Board of Education to hold a special examination’ of the school. A motion to che effect that “independent” inspectors be engaged was lost by a majority of one. Railway Crossings— Wo would again draw attention to' the by-law relating to the stopping of all horses ami vehicles befoie attempting to go oyer the railway line crossings. The police have been instructed to strictly enforce this regulation and have already a number of names of transgressors who will shortly make their appearance at the R.M. Court. Ashburton Club.—The Ashburton Club have decided to open on Monday next. Mi Fowler’s buildings, which are particularly suited for the purposes of the club, have been engaged and will be at once fitted up. The committee are working' most energetically and under their management the club bids fair to become an unqualified success. Considerably oyer 50 members are now on the rolls and it is'not too much to say that before Monday theVe will be a membership of fully 100.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” March 19, 1910.) Macadamised Road.—The two chains length of Macadamised asphalt laid down at the east end of the Ashburton traffic bridge some time ago is still giving good service and notwithstanding the heavy traffic which it has carried there are no signs of the asphalt breaking up. During wet weather; however, water lies in pools on the asphalt in consequence of the accumulation of dirt against the stops on each side. When a further portion of -the bridge is asphalted it might be well to have it graded much higher in the centre as the presence of water on the bridge in frosty weather would make traffic exceedingly dangerous. High School Barracks.—The Ashburton High School Cadets went into camp to-day for a week on the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's showgrounds for their annual training. Last year the camp was held at Lagmhor/ Baptist Sunday School.—Hie annual meeting of the Ashburton Baptist Sunday School was held on Monday. It was reported that all branches of the school work were in a flourishing condition and that there was a credit balance of £2 19s. The branch school at Fairton was promising and a cradle roll had been added to the school’s activities.
