COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) MARONAN. There was a good attendance at the March meeting of the Maronan Women’s Institute, held in the schoolroom, on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Graham Scales presided, and welcomed, visitors from Baling and Lismore. Mrs Scales was appointed delegate to the Mid-Canterbury Federation meeting to he held in jYshburton on April 5. A very helpful and instuctive talk on Institute matters was given by Mrs Davis (Ealing), ancl Mrs C. Dunstan and Miss N. Goldsmith gave demonstrations of the making of pineneedle baskets, eggshell mosaic work, and useful articles made from rubber tubes. They also showed several finished exhibits. Mrs O. Dunstan and Mrs Davis judged the competitions, which resulted Sponge sandwich with fancy filling, Mrs J. Davidson 1, Miss M. Whiting 2, Miss E. GaHetly 3; bar home-made soap, Miss M. Whiting 1, Miss E. Galletly 2, Mrs P. Ruck 3; bowl of autumn leaves and flowers, Mrs G. Scales 1, Miss M. Whiting 2. Votes of thanks to the demonstrators and judges of the competitions were proposed bv Mrs P. Ruck and seconded by Mrs M. Farrell. Afternoon tea was served by the members. DORiE. The monthly meeting of the Dorie Women’s Institute was held; in the Ardamine Hall. Miss Garruthers presided over a good attendance of members. A small flower show was held and a competition for the Jbest collection of vegetables resulted as follows: — Vegetables, Miss Gallagher 1, Mrs Alexander 2; best bowl of asters, Miss Garruthers 1, Miss Gallagher 2; best six gladioli, Mrs McKie 1, Miss Gallagher 2 ; best three gladioli, Miss Scott 1, Mrs W. Harrison 2. Mrs Greig gave ife demonstration on the making of crochet wool cushions and was accorded avote of thanks. The hostesses were the Misses Kingsbury, Kennedy, and Chambers. LYNDHURST. A meeting cf the Lyndhurst Hall Committee was held) recently, those present being Messrs G. A. Franks, (chairman), W. Cook (secretary), J. F. Franks, W. Chambers, O. Symes, J. S'. Lilley and C. C. Winn. A fresh scale of charges for the hall was drawn up, showing a. considerable reduction. The committee decided to hold a dance for the hall funds. RAKAIA. The weekly social afternoon of the Presbyterian Women’s Guild was held at the residence of Mrs C. Shannon on Wednesday. Competitions were won by Mrs Nicol, Mrs Liddington, Mrs G. Shannon, Miss N. Gardiner, and! Miss J. Stevenson. The following gave items:— l Misses M. Ashford, F. Cornelius, and Mrs Peterson (charade), Miss F." Cornelius (piano solo), Miss M. Ashford (humorous reading. A bring-and-buy stall realised £1 8s 3d. The hostesses were Mrs C. Shannon and Miss J. Stevenson. The social next week will be held at the residence of Mrs E. Oakley. MOUNT SOMERS.

Tile local committee of ladies is busily engaged organising and preparing for “The Cherry Blossom Fair.” to he held at Mount Somers on Saturday, March 23, in aid of the funds of the Springburn Presbyterian parish. At a meeting of parishioners held in the parish room, Mr J. A. Mears presiding, arrangements were furthered for the annual produce show and sale of work, to lie held on Saturday, April 27, in aid of the Mount Somers Parochial district funds. The first of a series of lantern lectures by the Rev. Trevor Williams, was given in the schoolroom last evening. There was a good attendance. HINDS, • The annual meeting of the Hinds Mothers’ Union was held at the Vicarage on Wednesday. The Rev. B. Taylor presided over a good attendance and conducted a short service. The following were elected; Enrolling member, Mrs Taylor; vice-president, Mrs Musson; secretary, Mrs Hockley; committee, all re-elected; auditor, Miss Taylor. A programme for the year was drawn up. A vote of thanks was accorded the officers and all who had provided cars for transport. A vote of sympathy with Mr Watson in the loss of his mother was carried in silence. Mr Taylor gave a talk on his tour in the North Island. The hostesses were Mrs Taylor and Mrs Sim. Solos by Mrs Jacob and Mr Taylor, brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
