SCHOOL SPORTS.
QUESTION OF THEIRi COST. TECHNICAL BOARD’S DISCUSSION A discussion on the finances of the Ashburton Technical High School with particular application to the expenditure on sports took place at a meeting of the school board of managers last evening. Mr E. Buchanan opened by stating that the board as a whole should have thorough knowledge of the school sports, and the revenue and expenditure.
Mr R. J. Thompson (Principal) said that the students were charged 5s a year for their sports, library facilities, etc. “I, with the teachers, captains of houses, sports master and mistress,” he said, “administer the funds. When material needs replacing, we see to it.” A member complained that he had a broken cricket bat in use, and this prompted another member to remark, softly, that even Don Bradman had started with a wicket for a bat.
“What is derived! during the year from sports?” pursued Mr Buchanan. Mr Thompson: All the students pay their fees and the amounts are checked over.
The chairman (Mi: A. L. Jones): We will arrange to have a balance-sheet at the next board meeting. Mr Buchanan: I merely want si little information about the matter and, indeed, we should know all about it. The chairman: It is all subject to audit. . Mr L. A. Charles brought the discussion to a close by stating that on the present roll number about £63 a year went through.
