TECHNICAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF THE BOARD. CONGRATULATIONS TO STUDENTS The Ashburton Technical High School Board of Managers met last night, Mr A. L. Jones presiding. Others present were Dr. J. Connor, Messrs W. Bramley, L. A. Charles, R. Houston, H. Watts, K. Buchanan and W. G. Hillier.
It was reported that there was a credit balance of £294 2s in the general account. The meeting decided to place £IOO on fixed deposit for six months.
The Canterbury District Standing Committee on Education wrote that its annual meeting would be held on March 12. It would consider the proposal that the University entrance examination should be made dependent on the equivalent of a bursary certificate.
Messrs Hillier and Bramley were appointed a sub-committee to consider the securing of seats for the use of students in the school grounds. The Principal (Mr R. J. Thompson) reported as follows : “Roll—-The roll number stands at 252 which is several better than that of the corresponding period of last year. “The school has settled down to overcome arrears of work caused by the £ime lost through the heat-wave variations in the timetable. Special local factors induced this school to take its barracks on most of the afternoons. concerned instead of having a half-holiday, with the result that there has been the minimum of disorganisation in tlie school work, while students had the advantage of being out of doors as much as possible. The barracks period for the boys was concluded with a most interesting shooting competition, Mr W. R. Tucker generously donating some of the prizes. The girls concluded their drill period with their annual swimming sports. One swimming record was ‘broken, namely, the torpedo dive, by Daphne White. A week later the boys’ annual swimming sports were held and again the weather was fine. Only one record was broken, that of the long plunge, by Richard Connell. “Garden plots—The school garden plots are in excellent condition this year. The soft turnip and swede experiments are promising well, while the difference between the uncertified and certified seeds is strikingly manifest in the potato section. The clovers and grasses forwarded from the Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North are showing the result of the. dry season, but are . otherwise satisfactory. Most instructive lessons are being drawn from a comparison of the results in the cocksfoot, clover and ryegrass sections. Gifts —Thanks arc due to Mrs 1, A. Cornish for the gilt of a cup to. be presented to the student host in English from year to year. “Examination results just to hand show the passes in plumbing ol students to be: Theory 66.7 per cent, and practice 50 per cent as against the Dominion average ol 37.4 and 45. . ft was agreed that the Principal ('Hr R. J. Thompson) and the instructor (Mr J. R. Richardson) should be congratulated on the success of students in the plumbers’ examination.
