HISTORIC LANDMARK
60-YEAR-OLD HOUSE. WOODEN BUILDING DEMOLISHED CHANGE IN HAMPSTEAD. Having stood sentinel on the Wakanui road for over half a century, a twostorey wooden house at the jxinction of Wakanui road and the Elgin road is in course of demolition. Practically the oldest house in Hampstead, it was an early landmark. Originally a sod hut, it was later built in its present style, and has withstood the stress of weather for upwards of 00 years. In the early days, it acted as a guide to travellers from M. (Glenmark) Moore's estate at Wakanui to As'hbuiton. The estate was an open tussock waste in those days, and this house was the first sign travellers had of their arrival within the vicinity! of the town.
Mr. 11. Jones, an early resident of Hampstead, built the house, and it was occupied by Mr W. Adams for many years. The last occupier was Mr J. Nelson.
It is intended to rebuild on the site, and soon all traces of this historic home will be removed.
